ZEN BANG LOVE
A literary novel that brings together Zen pracitce and the story of an "Amour Fou" in a on-the-road narrative, set in the Italian countryside.
Attilio, a filmmaker in a deep existential crisis, never imagined that his life would intertwine with that of a Buddhist monastery. But, when the monastery's master asks him to create a video documentary, Attilio is drawn to the monastery's out-of-time atmosphere and the frugal simplicity of its rules, words, and gestures.
The community stands in the countryside, overlooking the great plain crossed by the river, far from the all-too-driven neurosis of Milan. It is there that Attilio meets Sandra: enigmatic, off-kilter, sensual, seemingly unable to belong anywhere. Drawn to Attilio and to his little son, she follows him, but when she enters the social world tied to his work, she proves painfully exposed to risk and excess. Their attraction is strong and mutual, yet it offers no refuge and heals none of the wounds they carry.
Zen Bang Love unfolds as a series of on-the-road escapes along the Po, marked by absences and returns, tracing a movement that never settles and continually renews the two protagonists' desire to entrust themselves to one another.
With rare acuity and a clear, limpid prose, Fabio Guarnaccia explores love, restlessness, and awareness in a story that unsettles and deeply engages the reader and introduces one of the most intense female characters in contemporary Italian fiction.
Fabio Guarnaccia (born 1975) lives in Milan. He holds a degree in Philosophy and works in television. Since 2006, he has been the editor-in-chief of "Link. Idee per la televisione", and he co-directs the "SuperTele" series published by minimum fax. He is the author of the novels Più leggero dell'aria (Transeuropa, 2010), Una specie di paradiso (Laurana, 2015), and Mentre tutto cambia (Manni, 2021), which was nominated for the Premio Strega by Antonio Pascale.
