Everything seems to be going right for Cecily: adoring boyfriend, critically acclaimed first book, tenure track. But when a title IX complaint is brought against her by her most promising student, suddenly nothing goes according to plan.
Which perhaps should come as no surprise since her mother, Dorothy, has never planned anything, including Cecily's conception after a one-night stand. Dorothy's brother Tom claims she ignores warning signals but that's unfair. As soon as it had been pointed out to her that her old restaurant had been losing money for five years, she closed it. Tom, much to his former partner's chagrin, always picks up the phone when his sister or niece Cecily call. So, when Cecily needs to get out of town and asks if she can come stay with him, the answer is, of course, yes. She doesn't need to hear that his partner has left him, that his once promising architecture career is on the verge of crumbling, or that he's spending an inordinate amount of time listening to so-bad-it's-good music of midcentury, cigarette-and-martini America while sitting in his living room, surveying the wreckage of his life, wine glass in hand.
When Dorothy invites Tom, Cecily, and all of her friends to the grand opening of her retreat center that she is opening with a bestselling self-help author of dubious origin and says she needs to talk to Cecily everyone has reason to worry. Because as they all know, there's no drama like family drama.
