WHY UNIONS MATTER

Jane MaCalevey

WHY UNIONS MATTER is intended for progressives who have forgotten all the ways in which unions can be the engines of economic fairness. This book will counter the propaganda of the decades-long right-wing campaign to destroy unions, a campaign that has been spectacularly successful. Unions are at historic lows in the private sector, but in MacAlevey's argument, they are the only force capable of resisting worsening income inequality, and fighting the inexorable right-wing drift in global politics.

JANE MaCALEVEY is an organizer, author and scholar. Her first book, Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) (Verso Press) was named the “most valuable book of 2012” by The Nation Magazine. Her second book, No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age (Oxford) was released late in 2016. She is a regular commentator on radio and TV. She continues to work as an organizer on union campaigns, lead contract negotiations, and train and develop organizers.
