WHO KNOWS TOMORROW

Lisa Lovatt-Smith

A Memoir of Finding Family among the Lost Children of Africa

A celebrated children's advocate shares her extraordinary journey from being an international editor of Vogue, rubbing elbows with Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld, to living in a mud hut in rural Ghana.
(formerly titled Somebody's Child) Born in Spain and raised by a struggling single mother, Lisa Lovatt-Smith became an editor at British Vogue at 19, the youngest in Condé Nast history. She helped launch Spanish Vogue and partied with the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Andy Warhol. By her thirties, Lisa has a dream career and a glamorous life in Paris. But when her adopted daughter Leila is expelled from school, Lisa, determined to get her back on track, takes her to Ghana so they can both volunteer at an orphanage. The experience is transformational: Lisa moves to Ghana and founds OrphanAid Africa, dedicating her personal resources to reuniting hundreds of Ghanaian children with their families. Then she spearheads a drive for reform and an end to the corrupt orphanage system. On this unforgettable journey, she confronts death threats, snakes, malaria, road accidents, arson, and an armed attack. Who Knows Tomorrow is the engaging, frank, and often surprisingly funny story of one amazing woman who has traveled the globe in search of meaningful connection. And although, to Lisa, her story will always be all about the children, it is also a touching celebration of a woman who is talented, generous, and brave. Today, Lisa Lovatt-Smith lives in a mud hut in Ghana, from which she oversees her non-profit institution OrphanAid Africa. She currently directs a sustainable fostering center for hundreds of orphaned and vulnerable children, and her work has been honored with prestigious awards, notably the 2012 Clarins Most Dynamic Woman Prize, and the 2012 Face Africa Humanitarian Award. She has been the subject of a French documentary film, and is repeatedly featured in Europe's leading women's magazines. Earlier this year, she was profiled in The New York Times.
