WHO KILLED JANE STANFORD?

Richard White

The Gilded Age Story of Murder, Deceit, Spirits, and the Birth of a University

The story of Jane Stanford, the co-founder of the university that carries her name.
Although she co-founded one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, the story of the formidable Jane Stanford remains relatively unknown. After the death of her son, Leland Stanford Jr., she and her husband, Leland Stanford Sr., established Stanford University in memory of their child. When her husband passed away in 1893, Jane Stanford took the helm of the fledgling institution with gusto. However, only 12 years later, she was poisoned. Richard White delves into the mystery of what happened the night of February 28th, 1905, and who indeed killed Jane Stanford. Richard White is an historian of the United States specializing in the American West, the history of capitalism, environmental history, history and memory, and Native American history. His work has occasionally spilled over into Mexico, Canada, France, Australia and Ireland. He is a MacArthur Fellow and a recipient of the Mellon Distinguished Professor Award. His work has won numerous academic prizes, and he has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
