WHAT A MAP CAN DO

Alberto Lot Gabrielle Balkan

An accessible and humorous introduction to maps for budding navigators.
A raccoon narrator embarks on a big adventure in this exciting exploration of maps for the youngest readers. Traditional maps of cities, roads, and parks are joined by some less conventional ones such as inside the body, each one methodically introduced with humor and clear explanation. A clever, colorful, and engaging first look at constructing and decoding maps.

Gabrielle Balkan (she/her) is best known for nonfiction books that delight readers ages 212 with curious and essential facts about the United States, animal record-breakers, and more. She lives, works, and rides bikes in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley with her twin fifth graders and a writer husband.
Alberto Lot is a designer, an illustrator, and an animator. Formerly an art director at Leo Burnett and Condé Nast, he now creates visuals for several global brands and companies, as well as children's books! He has published several in Italian, but this is his first one in English. Alberto lives in Bologna, Italy, with his young family, and spends his days making things that are beautiful to see and easy to understand.

A standout picture book that both entertains and teaches.

Incorporating a dozen maps into a cohesive, well-paced tale, Balkan creates a clever instructional volume that helps young readers acquire the art of map reading... a useful, playful seek-and-find basic-skills book - and a primer for how to survive without GPS navigation.

This introduction to maps will have readers learning and laughing together... will engage young readers, while teaching them valuable map reading skills.
