Heinrich August Winkler’s four-volume History of the West is a much-praised masterpiece of German historical writing and an impressive publishing success, with 150 000 copies sold and some of the volumes translated into other languages. But not everybody can master the gargantuan dimensions of this comprehensive work of several thousand pages. The great historian now offers his readers a one-volume world history that traces the development of the West from the beginnings of antiquity to our own time and includes succinct versions of his most important arguments.
