WE WERE PROMISED SPOTLIGHTS

Lindsay Sproul

The Miseducation of Cameron Post meets Everything Leads to You in this queer young adult novel.
It's 1999 in the small town of Hopuonk, Massachusetts, and Taylor Garland's beauty has skyrocketed her to the top of the social stratum - which she wants nothing to do with. She's gay and in love with her (straight) best friend, Susan, something no one would have expected from this perfect Homecoming Queen.

But when Susan and Taylor share an intimate moment neither of them knows what to make of, Taylor embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and must decide if she is ready to step into the spotlight - or play the role she's been given.

Full of compelling introspection and painfully honest commentary on what it means to be gay and beautiful in a small town, We Were Promised Spotlights takes a new approach to one girl's coming out - and coming of age - story.

Lindsay Sproul, originally from Marshfield, Massachusetts, is currently a creative writing professor at Loyola University New Orleans. She holds an MFA from Columbia University and a PhD from Florida State University, and has received fellowships from Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and The MacDowell Colony. Her fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train, Epoch, Witness, The Massachusetts Review and other publications. She lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
