WATCH THE SKY

Kirsten Hubbard

A truly unique story about a family of survivalists in present-day America, and how one young boy must decide for himself whether disaster is indeed upon us.
To eleven-year-old Jory, family is everything. He lives with his mother, stepfather and two siblings in an old farmhouse on the edge of town. Jory considers himself lucky: after his biological father left them, his stepfather Caleb rescued Jory and his Mom from a lonely, desperate existence and swore to protect them always. But as their family grew, so did Caleb's premonition: something bad is coming. Now the signs are everywhere, and Caleb, an Iraqi war veteran, is determined to be prepared. So despite having just settled into a new school, Jory joins his family as they secretly begin digging a huge tunnel in the canyon behind their house. WATCH THE SKY is on one level about a sector of society that most people find puzzling and disturbing, and yet the novel is really about a young outsider struggling to keep his connection to his peers and the world around him. It is a story of bravery and choosing to embrace life and all its dangers. Kirsten Hubbard is the author of two previous YA novels, LIKE MANDARIN and WANDERLOVE.
