UNTITLED MEMOIR
Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning singer and songwriter Carly Simon's memoir will be about her childhood as a daughter of Richard L. Simon, co-founder of Simon & Schuster, the discovery of her life-altering stammer, her meteoric rise and unparalleled career in music, and her loves, including her marriage to James Taylor.
Carly Simon won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1971 for her debut album, Carly Simon which featured the breakthrough hit, "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be." In 1971, she released her second album, Anticipation, celebrating another Top 10 hit with the album's title track. One year later, Simon experienced her biggest success with the album No Secrets, which included the #1 single, "You're So Vain." The album sold millions of copies worldwide, occupied the #1 spot on the charts for six consecutive weeks and earned Grammy nominations in six categories. Simon’s other hits include "Nobody Does It Better," "Mockingbird," "Coming Around Again," and "Let the River Run," which was featured on the soundtrack from the movie, Working Girl, and was awarded a Golden Globe, a Grammy and an Academy Award. In 1994 Simon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She was awarded the prestigious Founders Award presented to her by ASCAP in 2012.
"Carly Simon is one of our most beloved and iconic artists," said Random House Publisher Susan Kamil. "Her music is the sound track for a generation. Like her gorgeous songs, her prose on the page is powerful, evocative, narrative driven, and the stories she tells are riveting. I look forward to publishing what will be an extraordinary memoir." Simon commented, "I was born into the world of book publishing. My father, the co-founder of Simon and Schuster, published many stories in their autobiographical form, and after I finally understood that making books wasn't just about glue, scotch tape and thick paisley paper, I was old enough to read some of them. (By that time I was also keeping a diary: 'Dear Diary, tonight we had peas and carrots and chocolate pudding for dessert.') After years of keeping journals and writing lyrics for my tunes, I have developed a strong interest in seeing how my life might just string together in a longer form. I know I'll be looking for a strong chorus, like a repeating dream or theme. I am thrilled to be writing for Random House. I know both of my parents would be smiling and proud."
