UNLOCKING THE TRUTH

Cherisse Jones Unlocking the Truth

Three Brooklyn Teens on Life, Friendship and Making the Band

Part memoir and part guide book, this is the inspiring and remarkable story of Unlocking the Truth, a teen, Brooklyn-based, heavy metal band on the rise. When not in school, Malcolm, Jarad, and Alec spend their time as rock stars opening for the likes of Guns N' Roses, and they recently signed a $1.8 million album deal with Sony.
When not in school, thirteen-year-olds Malcolm, Jarad, and Alec spend their time as rock stars opening for the likes of Guns N' Rose, recently stealing the show at Coachella, garnering front-page LA Times coverage. While working on their first book, the boys are simultaneously laying the tracks for their first album, and they recently secured a $1.8 million five-album deal with Sony Records. They are also putting together a documentary for Sundance on their rise and are working on a reality TV show. The book-making process will be featured in the documentary, and their reality TV show will involve the boys interviewing their favorite celebrities. Their success is the result of an impressive degree of hard work, dedication, passion and focus to their art—almost unheard of from kids so young.

A group on the cusp of stardom, their book will focus on essential truths or guiding principles (like determination and friendship) that have brought them this far and continue to guide them. The book will also be a resource for children who want to know how to recognize their dreams and what it takes to achieve them; and also for parents who want to know what they can do to support their child’s dreams and how to separate the whims from the real-deal aspirations. Charisse Jones who co-wrote The New York Times bestselling Life in Motion, American Ballet Theatre dancer Misty Copeland’s memoir, has signed on as writer.

The band has also been featured in The New York Times, Businessweek, Huffington Post, New York Magazine (they were #15 in their 2013 Reasons to Love New York issue), Ebony, Spin, the New York Post, Rolling Stone, Timeout.com, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and were on The Colbert Report. Their fans include such notable celebrities as Keith Urban, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Axl Rose, Queen Latifa and Dave Chappelle, and they’ve been featured in Cole Haan, Verizon, and Maybelline ads.
