UNA STORIA QUASI SOLO D'AMORE
A wonderful and touching novel, a novel about love and about knowing ourselves. A love story between two youths who in a country of old people look alien and feel lost.
"The talent of a first-class storyteller." - Antonio Tabucchi
They first meet on an October evening, outside a theatre.
He's just come back from London and is holding acting classes to a groupd of old people. She works for a travel agency.
Teresa's indecipherable allure confuses and disturbs Nino. When he is with her, things happen in him: he starts thinking, he questions himself. There is physcial attraction, but he sees in her a deep mystery she bears with simplicity and ease. The one looks at the other as in a mirror where their decisions, ambitions, fears are reflected and broken down. Just as Nino is the product of his age, Teresa, with her secret, appears to have gone far beyond. Hostages of an ageing world, they let themselves go in a new sentiment almost as if they had signed a pact, or made a bet.
Paolo Di Paolo makes his way into the contemporary stage by grasping the signs of an unexpected good, of a light that shines bright when we expect nothing in return, and when we suddenly feel that we have to move out from our comfort zones, to understand that we can live, after all.
