UN UOMO SOTTILE

Pierpaolo Vettori

Winner of the Neri Pozza Literary Prize 2021. A novel on the unbreakable twine between the writer, his art and his destiny.
A man who is the narrator is on the trail of a person he has never seen and who for years now has been secluded in a Venice nursing home, suffering from a serious degenerative disease. He is a famous writer, reduced to an absent life, with no memory, who has forgotten who he was and what he represented. The narrator mentions him only by his acronym, DDG: he has read everything that has ever been written about him. In a sort of impossible challenge with destiny, he tries to find him again, to give him consistency and awareness, telling the story of the man who seems to have disappeared into thin air. But he also reveals his private story in parallel: that of his wife's illness and recovery, similar to the one that affected DDG. Eventually, he decides to visit him in Venice. Will he dare to open the door and find him there? Vettori's beautiful book is dedicated to Daniele Del Giudice, one of the greatest contemporary Italian writers, who passed away in September 2021. Del Giudice had shown his unique perspective on literature since his debut in 1983. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer at the age of 56. Pierpaolo Vettori (1967) was born in Turin and graduated at Turin University in Foreign Languages and Literatures. Shortlisted for Premio Calvino in 2010 and 2011, Vettori debuts in 2011 with La notte dei bambini cometa. His books include Le sorelle Soffici, (Elliot Edizioni, 2012), La vita oncerta delle ombre (Elliot Edizioni, 2015) and Lanterna per illusionisti (Bompiani, 2018).

A wonderful book, with very beautiful pages.

A story that is also an ongoing reflection on the concepts of illness, identity and literature as absolue themes.

With an evocative and poetic writing, Pierpaolo Vettori crafts a novel that is a true act of love towards a great writer who devoted his life to literature, before disappearing into thin air.

In little more than 170 pages, Vettori presents us with the identity of a writer. What is really at stake in this book is literature and all that it can contain.

Winner of the Neri Pozza Literary Prize 2021.

An emotional reading experience.

A story of loss and subtraction [...] that addresses a question that is both personal and literary.

Pierpaolo Vettori's novel is a book that vibrates with a secret and bewitching force, a happiness that is both compositional and emotional.

Dealing with the mysterious and complex theme of identity, Vettori celebrates the extraordinary salvific power of literature and its miraculous ability to protect our memory, both private and collective, from the brutal passage of time.
