UN ALTRO FINALE PER LA NOSTRA STORIA

Silvia Bottani

After her highly successful debut, "Il giorno mangia la notte", Silvia Bottani explores the tormenting labyrinths of memory in a singular and unexpected love story which surprises us until the last pages.
Forty-year-old Mauro Massari is an award-winning 'mental athlete'; he assiduously dedicates himself to memory competitions, an activity he has been pursuing with exceptional results since his university days. To win, even at international level, he uses the 'loci technique', evoking in his mind places and moments from his love affair with Bianca Cerutti, sister of Fabio, his best friend in high school, who disappeared mysteriously twenty years earlier. Mauro, after the end of his relationship with Alice, with whom he had a daughter, gradually distanced himself from the world, liquidating his company, renouncing relationships and doing odd jobs such as tutoring and writing dissertations for money. Until the moment when Bianca returns from the past and contacts him, hoping to discover some fragment of truth about the disappearance of her beloved brother Fabio. Through the reconstruction of their meeting, of their mutual acquaintance and of his falling in love with Bianca, Mauro travels through his own 'memory palace', in which fiction and reality are inextricably merged, in an emotional adventure with surreal implications that will open up a new horizon in his life and restore his awareness of how much the feeling of love and desire are fuelled by the power of imagination. Silvia Bottani lives in Milan. Her literary debut Il giorno mangia la notte (SEM, 2020) has received a great critical acclaim. She is one of the new literary voices of Italian literature. She also works in the Contemporary Art world.

Comments

"A tender story, at times maddening and heart breaking, that leads to several endings. A story dedicated to those loves that - as the author defines them - are always imaginary."

"This novel of the soul is a beautiful journey into the uneasiness of reunited lives, which perhaps could still be changed, even as time dwells on memories and recollections."
