TRAVELS THROUGH DALI

Zhang Mei

With A Leg Of Ham

Equal parts travel narrative, recipe book, and a love letter to a town, Travels Through Dali: with a leg of ham is an illustrated journey through the culinary and cultural landscape of Dali, Yunnan.
Yunnan, at the southernmost tip of China, is a cradle of cultural and culinary diversity. Many people know it as the origin of Shangri-la, but it is also home to the region of Dali, a place that has become synonymous with the province. If you go to Yunnan, you must go to Dali.

The region is cherished for its unique food – famed Ham, mushrooms varietals, cheesemaking (a rarity in China), and rare herbs; temperate climate, surrounding rivers and mountains; ethnic diversity – bordering Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar it has been a cultural blotter; and overwhelming hospitality – many a traveller has settled in Dali having fallen in love with the Old Town.

Mei returns to her childhood home and journeys through the region, sharing a personal and beautifully illustrated chronicle of exactly what makes Dali so special.

ZHANG MEI is the founder of WildChina. Zhang Mei takes the reader on a magical journey through the most beautiful place in China. Written with whimsy and love, Travels is a journey not to be missed.

I love the idea of a cookbook that manages to engagingly and convincingly combine cooking, travel and culinary culture, and this is what Mei Zhang has managed to do in her first book, capturing wonderful stories and recipes from fascinating characters she encounters on her travels through her native Dali in Yunnan, carrying a leg of ham, and asking each of her characters to show her their own way with it. Brilliant!

Food lovers… will not be disappointed with Travels Through Dali, given the variety of rare recipes and the 150-odd colour photos that accompany them. Certainly, Zhang’s book made this former Yunnan resident nostalgic, as well as hungry to sample some of that well-travelled leg of ham.
