THREE WAYS TO BE BRAVE

Karla Clark Jeff Östberg

A Trio of Stories

Three stories of triumph combine to empower young readers to look inward for strength and create their own definition of bravery.
Told in gentle, rhyming couplets, this collection of stories presents relatable moments of unease and the strength found in conquering fears. A roaring nighttime thunderstorm, the first day of preschool, and a doctor's visit, in turn, encourage young readers to forge their own paths of strength in times of distress. Illustrated in rich, emotional scenes that depict vignettes of daily life, this book provides comfort and empowerment for resilience and resolution.

Karla Clark is an author and artist. Her passion for writing comes from her father, who was a consummate storyteller. Karla is the author of three novels, a book of short stories, and two children's picture books. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Rockford Arts Council, and Chicago Writers' Association. Karla lives in Rockford, Illinois, with her husband and adult autistic son. When she's not writing, Karla creates decoupage paper collages that she sells at art shows.

Jeff Östberg is Swedish illustrator with roots in northern Sweden. Residing in Stockholm since 2008, he works to create art for a wide range of international clients across the editorial, publishing, advertising, and exhibition space. His work, characterized by his use of soft colors, captures portraits of everyday life with a detailed focus on fashion. Since graduating from art school in 2013, Jeff spends most of his time illustrating, but finds ways for his passion of cooking and music to influence and inspire his illustration style.

In straightforward language and saturated, unlined digital art, each story offers an object lesson on the way that occupying a mind with other concerns can drive fear away.

...this book focuses on bravery, not fear, and supports a growth mindset... An insightful and sensitive introduction to what it means to be brave.
