THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT

Jenn Marie Thorne

A captivating journey along the presidential campaign trail, a story about politics and scandal, romance and betrayal, and—above all else—a story about family and what it means to truly belong.
When Kate Quinn’s mother died a year ago in a tragic car accident, Kate assumed that the secret of her father’s identity died along with her. She never expected that she’d learn anything at all about him—and she especially never expected that she’d learn anything from a mob of screaming reporters. But after a New York Times reporter discovers that the sixteen-year-old Kate is the illegitimate daughter of Senator Mark Cooper, presumptive Republican nominee for President, the press descends—and with it, the Cooper campaign.

When Kate agrees to join the Coopers on the campaign trail as part of a desperate attempt at damage control, she’s plunged headlong into the cut-throat world of politics, hoping to both forge a connection with the family she never knew and find some answers about the mother she’s so recently lost. From branding sessions and focus groups to smile-and-waves and donor dinners, Kate quickly learns the campaign ropes, making in-roads with the elusive Senator, his stoic wife Meg—who he’d been married to at the time of his affair with Kate’s mother—and their eight-year old twins, shy Gabe and feisty Gracie. She even manages to covertly carry on an unexpected flirtation with the son of the President—the Senator’s opponent in the upcoming election.

But when Senator Cooper’s stance on illegal immigration and his all too familiar campaign slogan—“The America We Know!”—hits way too close to home, Kate takes a risk that threatens to derail much more than just the Senator’s chances of reaching the White House. Faced with losing the only real family she has left, Kate must decide between pretending and speaking out, her past and her present, belonging… and walking away.

Jenn is a true star in the making. She’s bright, witty, lovely, and very enthusiastic—quite the publicity dream package. After graduating from NYU with a drama degree, Jenn moved to Los Angeles, joined a monthly reading series, and quickly realized that she was having more fun writing plays, screenplays, and superhero webisodes for the group than actually acting in them. Today, she writes fiction from a bungalow in sleepy Gulfport, Florida, alongside her husband Rob, an English television editor, and her mischievous hound Molly.

Whip-smart and heartbreaking and such a blast to read. I flew through this book.

An effervescent story about family, friendship, politics, and discovering who you are – I loved every word. And Andy Lawrence is totally my new book boyfriend.

Thorne offers an enticing glimpse at what unfolds behind convention stages while exploring Kate's complicated family past, as well as what it's like to be thrust into a national spotlight that can be as cruel as it is welcoming. Add in a delicious, secret romance with the President's son, and readers will be hoping for a sequel to this political page-turner.

Thorne appears to have researched the inner workings of political campaigns well and presents a believable portrait of the burdens they place on families. Kate’s reactions to her new family ring true as well. Absorbing and timely.

Smart and well-executed...It is easy to like strong, intelligent Kate . . . and the adults in her life are realistically complicated. Fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han will appreciate this well-crafted story about love and family.

I am obsessed with the smart, original, and captivating look behind the scenes in this high-stakes political drama. THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT reminds me of VEEP or THE WEST WING —only better, because it has teenagers.

If a swoony novel is what you’re looking for, then this is the novel for you! It’s perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Meg Cabot, and Huntley Fitzpatrick. . . . We devoured this book full of heart and know that you will too. Read more...

Both intelligent and heartfelt, as Kate finds unexpected love as well as unimagined courage...Not only does Thorne give readers a moving coming-of-age story, but casts a critical eye on the state of American politics.
