THE WOLF WANTS IN
Social worker Sadie Keller is still reeling from the sudden death of her brother, Shane, when the skull of a missing ten-year-old girl is found in the woods outside the rural farming community of Blackwater. Sadie knows the girl's mother, a former addict, and as she reconnects with her troubled friend and the tragic case unfolds, it begins to appear that Shane was somehow involved in the girl's murder. Sadie and her siblings shared a tight bond growing up, protecting each other from an abusive father, and she's not convinced that her brother was capable of such a terrible crime.
Eighteen-year-old Henley Pettit knows more than she wants to about Shane Keller's death, and is desperate to escape Blackwater before she's irreparably entangled in her family's crimes. She dreams of disappearing and leaving everything behind, if she can get out of town alive.
Hoping to prove her brother's innocence and uncover the truth about his death, Sadie delves into the dark corners of a life Shane kept hidden, unearthing secrets that make her question how well she truly knew him. Was her own brother a killer, or did he make a mistake and pay with his life? She'd like to ask Henley Pettit, but it might be too late.
In a tight-knit town ravaged by the opioid epidemic, where secrets bind families together across generations, some will do whatever it takes to keep the truth from coming to light.
Please see below for a blurb about the inspiration behind the novel from Laura herself:
My newly-married brother died suddenly and unexpectedly in his forties, and because his wife declined an autopsy, the cause of death remains a mystery. We were cut off by the family he had married into, our rights to medical records and other personal information overridden by his spouse, leaving nothing but speculation and suspicion. I wanted to write about someone who had experienced a similar loss but was able to hunt down the truth, something I haven't been able to do myself in real life. The fictional story diverged from there, with the discovery of the deceased's secret life and the suspicion that he might have been a murderer.
