THE WATERBEARER is set in the 14th century against a background of the dhow trade between Persia and East Africa. When Maji is shipwrecked, he is taken hostage by two strange men. On their perilous journey through the wilderness, he discovers that he has the power to divine water. Their destination is the mysterious, drought-stricken Kingdom of Dzimba Dzemabwe. There he meets the beautiful Mukonikoni, chosen to become the older Ruler's bride. Can he rescue her and will he ever be able to make the return journey to the sea and his home? Before he can, he has to confront the terror of mass hysteria when Mukonikoni is accused of witchcraft...
