THE UNTELLING

Tayari Jones

After dealing with the loss of her father and sister fifteen years ago, twenty-five-year-old Aria attempts to reinvent herself through marriage and beginning a family of her own, only to find that she must deal with the past before she can look to the future.
Aria is no stranger to tragedy - as a young girl, she and her older sister and mother survived a car crash that took the lives of their father and beloved baby sister. And although relations with her remaining family are strained, she's done her best to establish a solid, normal life for herself, living in Atlanta and teaching literacy to girls who have fallen on hard times. But now she has a secret that she's not yet ready to share with Dwayne, her devoted boyfriend, or Rochelle, her roommate and best friend: Aria is pregnant. Or so she thinks. The truth is about to make her question her every assumption and reevaluate the life she has worked so hard to build for herself... as it sends her reeling in a direction she had no idea she was destined to go. New York Times best-selling author Tayari Jones is the author of four novels: An American Marriage, Silver Sparrow, The Untelling, and Leaving Atlanta. Published in 2018, An American Marriage is an Oprah's Book Club Selection and also appeared on Barack Obama's summer reading list as well as his year-end roundup. The novel was awarded the Women's Prize for Fiction (formerly known as the Orange Prize), Aspen Words Prize and an NAACP Image Award. It was also a New York Times and Washington Post Notable Book and was longlisted for the National Book Award. Jones, a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, has also been a recipient of the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, United States Artist Fellowship, NEA Fellowship, and Radcliffe Institute Bunting Fellowship. Her third novel, Silver Sparrow, was added to the NEA Big Read Library of classics in 2016. Jones is a graduate of Spelman College, University of Iowa, and Arizona State University. Comments

Jones went to the wilderness and mounted a wild and bucking story. THE UNTELLING is a mustang. Free. Bold. Classy. No sophomore jitters here. No timidity. Just a strong wind swirling the truth, hoping for love, daring the reader to inhale the forgiveness.

A delicate portrait of a young woman's emotional fragility as she attempts to get over the greatest trauma of her life.

The first-person narration is convincing and genuine, and Jones handles her material with sensitivity and sympathy.

A shrewd and knowing portrait of poverty, racism and the hopelessness of the oppressed and the unlucky. In the end, it is very much about what human beings do when the world turns its back on them.
