THE GIRL IN HIS SHADOW

Amelia Blake

In the vein of Robin Oliviera's My Name is Mary Sutter and The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict, this debut braids immense historical research with a sweeping tale of the clash of love with unshakable ambition. An
amalgam of real people and events, The Surgeon's Apprentice is the story of maverick men and one unconventional woman, who believed in scientific medicine before the world believed in her.
She's done working in the shadows—it's time to step into the light

Raised by the eccentric surgeon Dr. Horace Croft after losing her parents to a deadly pandemic, the orphan Nora Beady couldn't care less about convention. She has no patience for the piano, needlework, or polite conversation—dissections and experiments are more to her taste.

Women face dire consequences if caught practicing medicine, but in Croft's private clinic Nora is his most trusted—and secret—assistant. That is, until the new surgical resident Dr. Daniel Gibson arrives. He has no idea that Nora is more qualified than he is, and to protect herself she'll have to play the role of a proper young lady.
But Nora can't keep up the act for long. She needs to pursue medicine, even if it means giving Gibson the power to ruin everything she's worked for. And when she makes a discovery that could change the field forever, Nora faces an impossible choice. Remain invisible and let the men around her take credit for her work, or let the world see her for what she is—even if it means being destroyed by her own legacy.

Amelia Blake has a split personality-- because she is the creative alter ego of writing duo, Jaima Fixsen and Regina Sirois, two authors who met as finalists of a writing contest and have been writing together happily ever since. They share a love of history, nature, literature, and stories of redoubtable women. Both are inseparable friends and prairie girls despite living thousands of miles apart. Jaima resides in Alberta Canada and Regina lives in the wheatfields of Kansas. Though they have each authored several novels, this is their first fully joint venture, and hence, Amelia's first book.
