THE STRESS OF HER REGARD

Tim Powers

Michael Crawford is forced to flee when he discovers his bride brutally murdered in their wedding bed. Yet it is not the revengeful townspeople he fears but the deadly embrace of the malignant spirit that is claiming him as her bridegroom.

Crawford will not travel alone; soon he is aided by his fellow victims, the greatest poets of his day—Byron, Keats, and Shelley. Together they embark upon a desperate journey, crisscrossing Europe and battling the vampiric fiend who seeks her ultimate pleasure in their ravaged bodies and imperiled souls.

Telling a secret history of passion and terror, Tim Powers masterfully recasts the tragic lives of the Romantics into a uniquely frightening tale.

THE STRESS OF HER REGARD won a Mythopoeic Award and was nominated for the World Fantasy and Locus Awards in 1990. Tim Powers has won the World Fantasy Award twice for his critically acclaimed novels Last Call and Declare. He also won the Philip K. Dick Award for The Anubis Gate. His 1987 book, On Stranger Tides was optioned to become the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Tim Powers' magical soap opera certainly soars with that same brand of narrative and linguistic ambition. Rich with period detail and sticky with authentically styled prose.

Good serious fantasy doesn't come much better than THE STRESS OF HER REGARD.

A horror story that wonderfully evokes the period...Strewn with literary personages and allusions, the book is entertaining on several levels, but most particularly as a chilling horror-adventure.
