THE STRANGERS

Katherena Vermette

In THE STRANGERS and THE CIRCLE, Katherena Vermette builds on the world she created in her bestselling, multiple award-winning, and internationally published debut novel, The Break. Told in multiple voices like The Break, THE STRANGERS takes readers into the lives of the family of Phoenix, her mother, Elsie, younger sister Cedar Sage, and grandmother, Margaret. The lives of these women demonstrate not only how trauma perpetuates through generations, but how resilience, recovery, and hope remain possible.

THE CIRCLE begins six years after the events of The Break. A blending of characters from both previous novels, THE CIRCLE includes the Traverse family—Cheryl and Lou—as well as police officer Tommy, and Jake and Ziggy from the younger generation. In both novels, readers will find everything they loved and admired about The Break: incredibly propulsive, heart-stopping narratives that are also nuanced portraits of contemporary challenges. The humanity of Vermette's characters is impossible to overlook as she insists we see beyond the simple labels society attaches to them. The riveting stories and complex characters in THE STRANGERS and THE CIRCLE will immerse readers in a world of human failings, bonds of love, and the tenacity to endure.

KATHERENA VERMETTE is a Métis writer of poetry, fiction, and children's literature. She won the Governor General's Award for Poetry in 2013 for her first book, North End Love Songs. Ms. Vermette's work has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies around the globe. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia, and lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her second book of poetry, river woman, was published in the fall of 2018.
