THE SECRETS IN SILENCE opens with Minnie, a large, lonely woman in a suburban shopping centre. When she visits the rest room she finds a newborn baby, abandoned, and on a whim decides to take it home with her. Meanwhile a father breaks down a locked door in the family home to find his teenaged daughter, Tara, unconscious and bleeding on the floor. When Tara is rushed to hospital and examined, the doctors all want to know where her baby is. The pregnancy is a shock to Tara's father and step-mother, who thought Tara had been wearing loose clothes because she was self-conscious, not because she was concealing something.

Tara is now under suspicion for killing and disposing of her baby, as she will 2not or cannot speak to explain herself. Indeed, Tara cannot speak at all anymore. Not far away, Minnie is weaving an elaborate story about the baby she intends to raise as her own. Although Tara cannot attend school, her step-mother pushes her to help the exhausted Minnie, struggling alone caring for her new baby

Nicole Trope is a former high school teacher with a Masters Degree in Children's Literature. In 2005 she was one of the winners of the Varuna Awards for Manuscript Development.
