THE REASONABLE MAN
Book One of THE CITY OF MEMORIES trilogy
The Lunar New Year in our hometown of Longcheng always heralds a bitterly cold spell. As if midwinter hasn't yet finished, as if it never will. The frost in the air, the dark blue of the early-morning skies and the darkness that starts to sweep in at four o'clock means that time passes extraordinarily slowly. But that is exactly the point: in winter, one's heart stills In the Zheng family, we prefer winter.
So begins the story of Xijue, the only male child of the Zheng family. Orphaned at ten, he was raised by his uncle and is now a young teacher at the local high school. All he ever wanted is to lead an ordinary life, marry his girlfriend, and keep his family close. But everyone seems to be leaving, starting with his two cousins: the beautiful and fiery Toni announces her decision to move to America to get married (to an unknown bridegroom), while the naïve Nanyin, barely eighteen, claims to have fallen in love with a classmate. Nothing is more shocking, however, when Xijue's fiancé dumps him for a man no one could've imagined, revealing a dark secret that will tear the Zheng family apart forever
