THE RAVAGED
RAVAGED is a fast-paced novel of adventure and realism that explores the lives of three separate characters unknowingly in search of self-discovery, as they journey through North and South America, focusing on themes of freedom, family, survival, equality and the human condition.
Start with Jack: "Run, run and never look back". Those are the words Jack's mother tells him on her deathbed. Those words haunt Jack. He's reflected on them every day since his mother's passing. Jack has more money than GOD. After losing his daughter to suicide, his wife to cancer and a son who wants nothing to do with him, his mother's words burn into the recesses of his brain, he's spent his entire life building wealth but now has no one to share it with, alone with his demons and a backpack, he heads to South America in search of meaning, resolution or maybe himself. But, what he discovers are people and situations that require nothing more than violence, struggle, survival and simplicity in order to exist. And through this, Jack discovers freedom.
Go to Hunter: a powerlifting-motorcycle mechanic who loses his job for handing his dog-abusing-boss his ass. When he arrives home he gets a phone call from his uncle telling him, his father has died in a mysterious house fire. Hunter has to travel from North Carolina to California for his father's ashes and to take care of his estate. He is accompanied by his biker buddies, Nugget and Itch. They encounter rural people and their Americana of daily living, struggles and problems. During each encounter, Hunter reflects on his upbringing with his father and the stories he told him while traveling all over the US as a traveling salesman. This helps to solve the problems he crosses but also to better understand the values his father passed onto him, something he'd never realized until now. Arriving in California, Hunter learns there is no evidence for how the fire started, that it's a mystery. Hunter is given a box left to him by his father, inside he discovers his father had an unknown past, a life Hunter knew nothing about.
Jump to Anne: a seventeen year old who runs away from an abusive father and alcoholic mother after being caught by her older brother stealing her father's savings from the kitchen freezer. Her brother violently attacks her. Anne hits him over the head in defense with a frying pan, leaving him upon the floor. Is he dead or alive? She flees, meets up with her best friend Trot and together they hop a train from Tennessee to Alabama in search of a new life. But, what they discover are the language and rituals of the rails, living hand to mouth, panhandling and dumpster diving, traveling across the US by train hopping, earning their way and building bonds and friendships, and uncovering something they never had; family.
