THE PERFECT COUPLE

Debby Holt

Friends and family all assume that Ed and Carrie Cazenove are a perfect couple, as do Ed and Carrie. They've weathered any number of domestic dramas over the years, and look forward to a happy retirement in which Carrie can write her book, Ed will dig his allotment, and they'll both travel together round France.

The latest family drama is the imminent break-up of their older daughter's marriage. On the same day that Carrie meets up with Charlie, a former boyfriend, Ed impulsively invites daughter Amy and her two children to move in with them. This is a disaster for Carrie since she and Amy have a long history of failing to understand each other.

Meanwhile, Amy's younger sister, Tara, and her boyfriend have moved to Edinburgh, and Tara is clearly distressed, which means that Carrie must spend time in Edinburgh, a city that is also home to Charlie.

As Ed and Carrie struggle to cope with the trials and tribulations of both their daughters and their grandchildren, the marital rock becomes distinctly unstable, and the Cazenoves face a difficult dilemma. What happens when a perfect marriage begins to crumble? How long should they fight to preserve it, and will there be a time when they should accept it's had its day?
