The Peloponnesian War
The Peloponnesian War (431 to 404 BCE) was a face-off between two power blocs: the first Delian League under Attic leadership and the Peloponnesian League led by its hegemon Sparta.
Thanks to Athens' strategists and the historian Thucydides, we know more about the course of this ancient world war than we do about almost any other ancient event. Bruno Bleckmann explains the reasons for the war, the various stages of the conflict, how it ended, and its historical significance.
Bruno Bleckmann is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Düsseldorf. C.H. Beck has also published "Die Germanen: Von Ariovist bis zu den Wikingern" (The Germanic Peoples: From Ariovistus to the Vikings; 2009).
