THE PATH OF NAMES

Ari Goelman

A fantastical mixture of ghost story, murder mystery, and summer camp drama.
Dahlia Shulman is not happy about wasting the first half of her summer vacation at camp. In fact, she’s downright miserable about it. She has no interest in nature walks, or singing by the campfire, or whatever other stupid activities they make kids do at summer camps. She’d much rather stay at home and practice magic tricks. But within minutes of arriving at Camp Moshava, Dahlia realizes that it might not be as boring as she’d feared. First she sees two little girls walk right through the walls of her cabin. Then come the visions— frighteningly detailed visions of a young Jewish man being pursued through 1930’s New York City. How are they related? Why is Dahlia the only one who can see them? And what’s up with the overgrown, strangelyshaped hedge maze that none of the campers are allowed to touch? Dahlia’s increasingly dangerous quest for answers leads her right to the center of the maze—but it will take all her courage, smarts, and sleight-of-hand skills to get her back out again. This debut novel delivers contemporary fantasy with a uniquely Jewish flavor. Ari Goelman has published over a dozen short stories, most recently in Strange Horizons, Talebones, and Fantasy Magazine. He is a past winner of the Writers of the Future competition and a graduate of the Clarion West writers workshop. Publishers Weekly has described his short fiction as “outstanding” and “lovingly constructed,” while The Harvard Crimson has described him as a master of “sci-fi, fairies, and the urban ghetto.” His latest short stories are forthcoming in Shimmer Magazine and Daily Science Fiction. A graduate of MIT’s PhD program, Ari lives in Vancouver, Canada with his family.
