The Northern Lights

Bernd Römmelt

Solar Splendour in the Night Sky

/// A unique nature phenomenon in stunning photos /// One of the most popular winter tourism: watching northern lights in Scandinavia

The dramatically coloured spectacle of the aurora borealis has entranced human beings since times. Photographer Bernd Römmelt first experienced the phenomenon in northern Alaska in 1997. Since then, the Northern Lights have held him in their thrall and he has become an avid and ambitious fan of aurora photography. He has visited all the adjacent regions of the Arctis – northern Canada, Iceland, and parts of northern Scandinavia – to photograph this dazzling natural phenomenon in every conceivable Arctic landscape setting. A series of over 150 stunning photographs documents the aurora borealis and its mesmerizing display of ever-changing, other- worldly colours. Accompanying the photographs is a compelling narrative describing Römmelt’s passion for this dramatic natural spectacle. In it he explains the different types of aurora borealis, explores related myths and legends and offers practical advice on aurora photography.
