THE MEMORY OF AFTER

Lenore Appelhans

We live in Level 1. Welcome to LEVEL 2, an astonishing and imaginative debut novel by Lenore Appelhans, the popular book blogger of Presenting Lenore.
Having died in violent circumstances the day before her 18th birthday, Felicia Ward spends her days in Level Two alongside her hive-mates, locking into her memory chamber, renting the memories of others, having her own memories rented, and looking back over her too-short life. Felicia spends a lot of time remembering one particular boy she loved on earth, Neil, and also the bad boy who broke her heart Julian. When Julian one day breaks into Level 2 and tells Felicia they have to escape and that there is much she doesn't know about Level 2, a heart-pounding thrill ride set in a disturbing after-world begins

This fantastic, entertaining and pacy read combines some of the major categories and themes that have worked so well in the past few years dystopian, "dead girl lit", angels, just to name a few. It's a high concept, smashing mash up with superb writing. Line-by-line Lenore is truly accomplished and stunning. She is one of the most popular YA bloggers in the world and lives in Frankfurt. The best comps: think BEFORE I FALL meets FALLEN or HUSH, HUSH meets ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and "Minority Report". Although LEVEL 2 is totally commercial, the literary tone lends itself well to many tastes.

Absolutely gripping. My heart pounded on nearly every page. You won't be able to put it down.

The way Appelhans mixes memory with plot is exceptional.

LEVEL 2 is an immensely layered story... Appelhans is adept at never causing confusion.

Appelhans brings the afterlife to a whole new level... a high-voltage thrill ride through love, death, and memory that will leave you breathless.

A gripping debut! This utterly unique take on the afterlife poses fascinating questions about how our memories shape who we are-and who we love. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

The premise that pleasant memories can be addictive hits home, Felicia and readers eventually see that in order to move on, the souls in the afterlife need to overcome their unpleasant memories... An absorbing, sensitive read.

Sold to S&S in conjunction with a high five figure film option for the project from CBS films.
