Chanelle Benz's work is characterised by how much authentic feeling she brings both to her characters and the extraordinary, wide-ranging settings where her stories resideeverything from a dark, McCarthy-esque Old West that appears in her story West (of the known) to 16th century England in an askew pastiche of Early Modern English told from the perspective of a monk at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries.

Chanelle Benz is a British Citizen with permanent residency in the U.S. She has published short stories in The American Reader (edited by Ben Marcus), Fence (guest-edited by Rivka Galchen), The Cupboard and Granta.com, one of which received an O. Henry Prize. She received her MFA at Syracuse University as well as a BFA in Acting from an intense conservatory-style drama program at Boston University. She was born in London to an English mother and an Antiguan father and moved to Salt Lake City at the age of 7. She currently lives in Houston.

In her debut collection ... it's striking how [Benz] can create a world so sharply aligned with a specific place without too much cumbersome exposition. Instead, her first-person narrators require readers to have an up-close and personal encounter with their emotional states; you won't have any problems turning the page, and, in fact, you might wish that each story was the beginning of a novel. Not a bad place to start a career in writing fiction.
