THE LONG ACCOMPLISHMENT

Rick Moody

A Memoir of Struggle and Hope in Matrimony

IN HIS LATEST WORK OF PERSONAL NONFICTION, Rick Moody lays bare, in an eventful month-by-month account, the first year of his second marriage.
At the account's start, Moody – a recovering alcoholic with a history of depression and the divorced father of a beloved young daughter – finally comes to a point in his life when he feels ready for a fully committed relationship, and enters into his second marriage. Emerging from the wreckage of his past, the first year of this new marriage begins humbly, with tender hopes, only to be battered by a barrage of external troubles – miscarriages, the death of friends, and robberies.

But despite all this, matrimony turns out to be a source of great strength during these hard times, and the author ultimately finds that he is all the tougher and more durable when he has his committed partner by his side.

RICK MOODY is the author of the award-winning memoir THE BLACK VEIL and the novels HOTELS OF NORTH AMERICA, THE FOUR FINGERS OF DEATH, PURPLE AMERICA, THE ICE STORM, and GARDEN STATE, as well as multiple collections of short fiction. Moody is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, and his work has been anthologized in Best American Stories, Best American Essays, and the Pushcart Prize anthology. In 2018, he received an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
