THE LITTLE WITCH'S BOOK OF SPELLS
The Little Witch's Book of Spells is a grimoire for magically inclined children ages 8-12.
Ariel Kusby, a children's bookseller at Powell's City of Books in Portland and a long-time practitioner of witchcraft herself, has developed this magical handbook.
The Little Witch's Book of Spells, which we envision will be illustrated, proposes 40 spells that kids can do themselves, either alone or with friends. With their own private grimoire, The Little Witch's Book of Spells shows kids how to manifest magic around them, with real spells that are simple and fun, centered around themes of love, white magic, self-care, achievement, mindfulness, imagination, and friendship.
Have you ever wanted to banish a bully or manifest a fairy? Including only accessible ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, The Little Witch's Book of Spells are activities for children, focusing on positive themes such as setting intentions, loving oneself, being mindful, and using the power of the imagination to feel powerful and also to have fun. They sneakily encourage positive self-care behaviors like improvised playtime, exercising, and spending time in nature, while also conjuring magical mermaids and forest spirits. Kusby has pulled from many various resources and years of study for her spells. She draws on her knowledge of simple kitchen herbs and ingredients from her internship at The Herb Shoppe in Portland, Oregon, from which young readers can build their own magical apothecary.
Ariel Kusby is a writer, bookseller, and witch based in Portland, Oregon. She has been practicing witchcraft since her teens, and has written articles on magic and wellness for various publications, such as Luna Luna Magazine, Portland Monthly, Garden Collage, and Adolescent, amongst others. Currently, she works as a bookseller in the children's room at Powell's City of Books, where she runs the folklore and Harry Potter sections, and regularly curates magical-themed displays.
