The Language of the Sun

Matthias Göritz

A polyphonic, sensual homage to vibrant Istanbul

Young American Lee is newly divorced and restless. She travels to Istanbul, hoping to find out more about her grandmother’s past: Helene Bischoff, a German Jew, fled to Istanbul in the 1930s to escape the persecution of the Nazi regime. At that time Kemal Atatürk was offering many Jews asylum in Turkey; he was especially keen to welcome intellectuals, engineers, doctors and lawyers whom he hoped would help promote the radical modernisation of Turkey.

In Istanbul, that historic megacity between East and West, Lee learns that her grandmother’s former companion and occasional lover, the journalist and agent Georg Naumann, is still alive, now well over a hundred years old. What links him to Helene and perhaps even to Lee? In this exciting, multifaceted novel we experience the violence of history, the power of love and Istanbul as a labyrinth and a refuge. Knowledgeable and sensual – the major new novel by Matthias Göritz.

*Could “not-belonging” somewhere also be a solution?
