When the carnival stops in Victorian-era Appalachia, charismatic ringleader Charlie Lionheart convinces Ella Beckley, a nurse from town, to join his nomadic caravan long enough to nurse his ill niece back to health. Though she has reason to fear men, she discovers her own gypsy heart and longs to give in to her feelings for him—but Charlie holds back, certain that once she knows the reason for the tattoos beneath his collar, she will flee to the safety of the hills from which she came.
