THE INVISIBLE HAND OF MARIA EDGEWORTH

Jeanna Smialek

How History Overlooked its First Female Economist

Maria Edgeworth was a pioneering Irish writer who out-earned Jane Austen in their day and who inspired a generation of great novelistsbut more than that, she was arguably the world's first female economist. Her contributions were ignored because of her gender and because she expressed her findings in literature and letters rather than math and textbooks. FORGETTING MARIA will rectify that oversight, and in telling Maria's extraordinary story it will retell the origin story of economics as you have never heard it before: a tale that includes women.

Maria Edgeworth took the highly philosophical ideas recently developed by Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, and others, applying them to real-world problems she saw around her estate in Ireland. Her books are explorations of the politics of rent and the divisions of social class, and her letters show that she was heavily influenced by economic ideas as she contemplated the world around her, consciously incorporating utilitarian and laissez-faire principles into her literature. And through her correspondence and conversation, she at least helped to informand may have meaningfully shapedthe thinking of Ricardo, Malthus' successor Richard Jones, and other men who are recognized as instrumental in helping to formulate classical and later neoclassical economics. FORGETTING MARIA will reopen the story of how the world-shaping social science of modern economics came to be, giving it an update that is more than two centuries in the making.
