TO BREAK A COVENANT

Alison Ames

A creepy YA Horror novel with LGBQT elements and shades of SAWKILL GIRLS.
Clem has lived in the town of Moon Basin her entire life - and the town has been haunted for as long as anyone can remember. Some say it started 1962 when an explosion happened in the town mine and sixteen men vanished without a trace, but others say that something has always been strange about Moon Basin. The disaster in the mine made it impossible to live there - underground fires, a choking blanket of ash - but life in the New Basin is just as fraught. The ex-mining town relies on its haunted reputation to bring in tourists and ghost hunters, but there's more truth to the rumors than most are willing to admit. The mine still has a hold on everyone who lives there.

The people of New Basin experience strange phenomena - sleepwalking, night terrors, voices that only they can hear. Nobody can keep a pet, which Clem's best friend Nina discovers when her dad buys her a kitten and it shows up dead a few months later with its feet missing. It's possible that the gruesome pet mutilations are the work of the coyotes that stalk the town, but there's no way to prove it. No matter how many vans of ghost hunters come through the town, nobody seems to be able to get to the bottom of what is really going on.

Clem and Nina form a perfect loop - best friends forever, and perhaps something more. Their circle opens for a strange pale girl named Lisey with a knack for training crows, who she claims are spirit messengers for the dead. She's kind and gentle, but something has always been off about her... Enter Piper, the fourth and final member of their quartet. Her father's new job takes him deep into the mine, but the obsession he develops is anything but professional. The girls' friendships are tested as his grim fascination deepens and the four girls decide to start investigating what might really be happening down in the mine.

Alison Ames lives in Boulder, Colorado with a lot of animals and her almost-wife. She loves birds, comics, and the rule of three. The Haunting of Moon Basin is her first novel. You can find her on twitter @2furiosa, and if you know (or are) Harry Styles she actually insists that you do so.
