THE GUARDIAN OF LIES
THE GUARDIAN OF LIES is set in 1953 in the South of France during the Cold War, when the fragile peace that existed between the West and Soviet Russia was balanced on a knife edge. It is a spy thriller about a family torn apart by secrets and conflicting allegiances.
Eloïse Caussade is a courageous young Frenchwoman, raised on a bull farm near Arles in the Camargue. She idolises her older brother, André, and when he leaves to become an Intelligence Officer working for the CIA in Paris to help protect France, she soon follows him. Having exchanged the strict confines of her father's farm for a life of freedom in Paris, she becomes an operative in a private detective agency run by the flamboyant Clarisse Favre.
But everything changes when André is injured because of a bad decision that Eloïse makes while trying to help him escape from a Soviet agent who is pursuing him. Unable to work, André returns to his father's farm to recover, but Eloïse's sense of guilt and responsibility for his injuries sets her on the trail of the person who attempted to kill him.
A summons comes from her domineering father requesting her to return to Arles to help him. On arrival there she discovers that the American Air Force is taking over a large section of her father's land to extend their runways. Against the wishes of many French people, America is building a string of eleven nuclear airbases across France to act as a deterrent to the expansionist threat of the Soviet Union.
Eloïse finds her hometown in a state of unrest and conflict. Those who are angry at the construction of the American airbase with its lethal nuclear armaments confront those who support it, and when a large demonstration against the scheme takes place in the streets it flares into violence, stirred up by Soviet agents, including Eloïse's younger brother Isaac. Murder is committed in Serriac and rifle shots are fired at Eloïse on her father's bull farm, forcing her to delve deeper into the motives behind the violence.
When an open day is held on the air base to bring the conflicting sides together, a violent attack is launched by a fervent Communist in which two aircraft are damaged and two people killed. This brings the wrath of the Commander of the air base down on their heads and a stern change of attitude by the Americans.
Throughout all this unrest, Eloïse is still relentlessly hunting down the man who betrayed her brother and his country, and she is learning to look at those she loves and at herself with different eyes. She no longer knows whom she can trust. Who is working for Soviet Intelligence and who is not? All around her are lies within lies. She breaks into the office of the town mayor to find what enemy secrets he is hiding and to her horror she discovers that her own father is involved with him. She fears he is the Soviet agent she is seeking.
As tension rises, Eloïse and Inspector LéonRoussel, the chief of local police to whom she has grown increasingly close are drawn into a net of deceit and danger that culminates in her brother being taken hostage. In a dramatic and heart-wrenching climax Eloïse finally uncovers the shocking truth behind the lies and it changes her life.
