THE END OF THE RAINY SEASON

Marian E. Lindberg

Discovering My Family's Hidden Past in Brazil

Observant, wrought with honesty, and sweeping in its ambitions, this memoir is a powerful examination of identity and human relationships with nature, and between one another.
Marian Lindberg grew up believing that Walter Lindberg, the man who raised her father, was a brave explorer who had been murdered in the Amazon. Marian was eight when her father first told her about her grandfather and how his business partners blamed cannibals for the death, though her dad was certain this was a cover-up. Marian loved the story and loved her exotic roots. But as she got older bits and pieces started falling out of place and she felt compelled to learn more.

Her search played out slowly at first, over decades entwined with law school, a love life, and parenthood. Then she made a startling discovery and, to learn the truth, Lindberg set off for the Amazon. Aided by generous Brazilians who adopted her search as if it were their own, she discovered as much about herself and her family as she learned about Walter, whose true role in Brazil’s history turned out to be unexpected and deeply troubling.

A lawyer and photographer as well as a writer, Marian E. Lindberg works as Senior Staff Writer for The Nature Conservancy, an international environmental organization with programs in the U.S. and in over 30 countries, including Brazil. She is a former Senior General Attorney for the ABC television network.

This ruminative family mystery brims with incident, from tropical trail-tracing to personal health crises, and, ultimately, both some disturbing revelations and a hard-won peace of mind.

Raised in a house full of secrets, Lindberg believed there was one piece of family history that was not shrouded in mystery: the heroic story of her grandfather. Told by her father that Walter Lindberg had been an engineer, an explorer, and an intrepid adventurer, she fervently believed he had been murdered by either cannibals or by greedy members of his own expedition deep in the jungles of the Amazon. As she grew older, her instincts as a lawyer and a journalist led her to believe that there was more to the story. Embarking on her own dangerous odyssey into the heart of the Amazon, she uncovers some startling truths about both herself and her family’s twisted past This intriguing journey of self-discovery reads as an exotic travel memoir as well.

Earnest and convoluted, Lindberg's story awards patient, adventurous readers.
