THE DEATH DOULA'S GUIDE TO DYING WELL
What to Expect When Your Loved One is Dying and How to Create Positive End of Life Experiences on Your Own Terms
Founder of Doulagivers Institute and Hospice & Oncology nurse Suzanne O'Brien provides empowering insight into what constitutes a "good death," and how we can help our loved ones through this monumental transition and prepare for our own - for readers of Atul Gawande, Paul Kalanithi, and Margareta Magnusson.
While we readily prepare for the birthing of babies, we tend not to prepare for the "birthing" of death. A practical companion to Being Mortal or The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, The Death Doula's Guide to Dying Well (working title) offers meaningful insight into what constitutes a "good death" and how we can help our loved ones through this monumental transition with empathy, patience, and peace of mind. Readers will not only learn how to properly care for someone who is dying, they will also heal their own relationship with death and begin to prepare for their own.
With stories from the bedsides of Suzanne O'Brien's patients over the years working as a palliative care nurse along with worksheets to help readers with the practical aspects of a good death, The Death Doula's Guide to Dying Well will include everything they need to know to create the kind of end-of-life experience they wish to have.
Suzanne B. O'Brien, RN is the Founder & CEO of Doulagivers Institute. Her life's mission is to increase access to high quality end of life education and care for patients and families throughout the world. She has developed free resources and trainings for family caregivers and practitioners from her firsthand experience as a hospice and oncology nurse and palliative care professional at the bedsides of more than 1,000 end of life patients. Suzanne has been awarded "Worldwide Leader in Healthcare" by the International Nurses Association for creating Doulagivers Institute and was named Humanitarian Ambassador for Oprah Magazine in 2019 for her work to bring peace and comfort to those facing the end of life around the globe. She has a degree in Transpersonal Counseling and Spiritual Ministry from the Association for the Integration of the Whole Person in Los Alamitos, California. She is also a founding member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's End of Life Doula Council and a founding member and Former VP of the National End of Life Doula Alliance.
While readers won't need to be familiar with The Doulagivers Institute, it's worth noting that the Doulagivers model of end of life care has been embraced by communities around the world. Currently, along with the US and Canada, Doula Practitioners are based in several countries including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland, Uruguay, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Curacao, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Ukraine, Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania.
