THE COMFORT OF LIES
THE COMFORT OF LIES is the story of three mothers connected by one five-year-old girl.
Five years ago Tia got pregnant. Her married lover pressed for abortion, but she gave up the baby in an identified adoption. Now, each March an envelope of photographs arrives, pictures she treasures and dreads. Tia’s work with needy elderly clients and nights spent drinking increase her fervor to connect with her daughter and lost lover. Five years before, Juliette considered her life ideal: She loved her husband and sons with uncritical intensity; her organic skin care business thrived. Then she found out about her husband’s affair. He’d promised he’d never stray again and she believed him. But Juliette never knew about the baby. When she finds out about the girl, she can’t imagine how he ever denied his child. She doesn’t know how to keep her family intact, or if she can trust and respect her husband again, neither does she know how to fall out of love with him. Five years earlier, Caroline, a dedicated research pathologist adopted a child to please her husband, despite her reluctance to be a mother. Now she finds herself leaving the hospital later each night. When she learns the truth behind her child’s birth—having been told the father was unknown—Caroline questions if she’s the right one to raise this girl, putting her marriage, family, and belief in herself at risk.
