THE CAT AND THE DEVIL

James Joyce

The mayor of a small town makes a deal with the devil to build a bridge across the local river. When the devil comes to take his part of the bargain, the clever mayor appeals to the devil's weak spot - his love of cute cats.

First published by Faber and Faber in 1965, The Cat and the Devil was last published in 1988. It was originally written in a letter to Joyce's grandson in 1936. For many years there has been no edition of the work in print or available due to uncertainy surrounding its copyright status.
