Mary Crowley's privileged life has not protected her from misfortune. Following the amputation of her right leg, she is confined to a chair, and desperate to walk again. When she discovers her seemingly devoted husband never sent a letter to a man who could make her a prosthetic leg, she undertakes a risky journey across the sea to seek the help of a man whom she hopes will carve her a new leg from whalebone.
But dark forces are at work on the island - forces she cannot explain or control. When a local child goes missing and another mysteriously appears, one who bears an uncanny resemblance to a bone doll, Mary is swept up in a mystery much bigger than herself. Laurel Remington writes emotional women's fiction and intelligent romance novels under the name Lauren Westwood. She has also published three middle grade novels, and in 2015 was the winner of the Times/Chicken House Children's Fiction award. Originally from California, she now lives in Milford, Surrey, where she also works as a solicitor in renewable energy.
