THE INNOCENTS

Michael Crummey

The Blinder is a searing, brilliant, and immersive story of pre-adolescent brother and sister Evererd and Ada, orphaned, living alone,
isolated from society, who create a world of two, with devastating consequences, from an author who is recognized as one of the
most important writers in Canada. Crummey's previous works, including Sweetland, Galore, and River Thieves, have been shortlisted
for every major Canadian prize and have sold over 225,000 copies in North America.
• From the winner of the Commonwealth Writer' Prize for Best Book, finalist for the IMPAC Dublin Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Governor General's Award, and national bestselling author comes one of the most-buzzed-about-books of 2019, a novel where the classic Canadian literature of Alistair MacLeod meets Gabriel Tallent's My Absolute Darling and Emma Donaghue's Room

THE BLINDER is the story of pre-adolescent orphaned brother and sister Evered and Ada, living alone and isolated from society, who create a world of two with devastating consequences. When their parents along with their infant sister die, in quick succession, Evered and Ada mirror their parent's hardscrabble life in what becomes known as “Orphan's Cove”, bartering their fish and animal pelts for dried goods delivered by a ship aptly named The Hope. Ada following the wailing of a baby seal is almost heart stopping - we know as readers what the siblings do: that the death of one is the certain end of the other. As the siblings navigate their precarious existence and development from children to young adult they are forced – for the first time in their lives – to turn away from one another in order to survive.

MICHAEL CRUMMEY´S first novel in 5 years, The Blinder is inspired by a line in an historical survey and brings to mind modern classics like Gabriel Tallent's My Absolute Darling or Emma Donaghue's Room. His previous works, including Sweetland, Galore, and River Thieves, have been awarded the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book (Galore, 2010), the Canadian Authors' Association Book of the Year Award (Galore, 2010), and have been shortlisted for the Governor General's Award (Galore, 2009, and Sweetland, 2014), the Libris Fiction Book Award (Galore, 2010), the Atlantic Independent Booksellers' Choice Award (Galore, 2010), the Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award (Galore, 2010), and the International Dublin Literary Award (Galore, 2011). His books have a combined sales upwards of 250,000 copies in North America.
