THE AMERICAN MISSION

Matthew Palmer

The American Mission is a thrilling debut set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, following the exploits of a male American diplomat and a female Congolese geologist fighting to protect the country—and themselves—from nefarious forces out for their own gain.
THE AMERICAN MISSION features taut, intricate suspense from start to finish, and a compelling and believable cast of characters.
After witnessing a devastating incident in Darfur, Alex Baines, former rising star in the US State Department, is stripped of his security clearances and relegated to a desk job as a visa clerk. Alex is about to resign when he receives a call from Howard Spencer, his former mentor and the current American Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Spencer offers him an incredible opportunity to start over, restoring both his security clearances and his reputation.

Arriving in Kinshasa eager to return to the cutting edge of diplomacy, Alex quickly finds that working for Spencer is not quite the opportunity he imagined it to be. The shady multinational Consolidated Mining seems to be everywhere he turns—even within the confines of confidential areas in the embassy. When a hostage situation involving a Consolidated survey team arises, Alex goes in to negotiate and finds himself in the middle of the conflict with the leader of the guerilla force, Joseph “The Hammer of God,” and Marie Tsiolo, the local geologist whose team is taken hostage. Information from the tense situation only heightens Alex’s fears of the company’s motives.

As violence escalates in the region, Alex struggles to balance his own best interests against the greater good of the people of the Congo, and his loyalties are put to the test as he races to determine the right course of action.

Superb! Embassy insider Matthew Palmer takes us inside the secret ‘club’ of international diplomacy, and races his characters through political tightropes and hair-raising encounters. I read this tale at warp speed, thrilled all the way. With THE AMERICAN MISSION, Palmer joins the exalted ranks of Follett, Forsythe, and Clancy.

THE AMERICAN MISSION is one of those wonderful novels, where great storytelling is woven through with the intricate detail only a knowledgeable insider can supply. I loved it!

A captivating debut thriller by a longtime foreign service officer…This is first-rate fiction. Let’s hope Palmer has a sequel in the works.

There’s the mission the public knows, and the mission we’ll never see. Matthew Palmer knows both, which is what makes THE AMERICAN MISSION crackle with complexity and authenticity. What a debut.

Palmer creates full-bodied characters and an intriguing story that showcases the difficult choices ambassadors face on a daily basis. Pair this one with John le Carre’s The Constant Gardener.

What a fantastic debut thriller...Only an insider with years of service in the diplomatic corps could detail the intrigues of the international and domestic politics of Africa.

Bristling with high adventure and low-down international politics, THE AMERICAN MISSION by Matthew Palmer follows U.S. diplomat Alex Baines as he’s hurled into the cauldron of exotic beauty and human greed that is today’s Congo. This great novel has it all: unforgettable characters, razor-sharp dialog, insider details that only an American diplomat would know, and an exciting love story. Reminiscent of Graham Greene, Mr. Palmer is far better than John le Carre. This is the sort of book you don’t want to end, and when it does, you crave the next one. Mr. Palmer is a rare talent. You won’t want to miss THE AMERICAN MISSION.

Matthew Palmer’s debut novel THE AMERICAN MISSION (Putnam, June 2014) is one of National Public Radio’s Best Books of 2014! Read more...

The American Mission by Matthew Palmer cuts so close to the bone it could be nonfiction. It opens with one of the most horrific scenes I have ever read, which segues into a fast and furious story of international intrigue and corporate corruption, with nonstop action, vivid characters and crisp dialog. This is a thriller of great integrity and intelligence, written by an author who really knows his stuff. I highly recommend it.

Talk about writing what you know—Palmer is a veteran diplomat and it shows on every page of his debut novel. Crackling with authenticity that sizzles with emotional clout, this is a superb debut by a coming star in the thriller genre. Five stars by any review.
