When a glitch allows sixteen-year-old Claudia into the mind of the person playing her, she realizes that the dystopian world she’s lived in for the last three years isn’t the apocalypse – it’s the bestselling virtual role-playing game in the country. And she’s just one of the human characters being unknowingly forced to play in it.
Claudia’s never imagined an existence outside The Wasteland because daydreaming is a waste of time when you’re hungry. She's never cared about her life before the catastrophe, a life she has no memory of. But now she knows the group of teens depending on her for safety, and the enemies she’s killed to stay alive, are characters with no control over their own minds and actions. And since she’s the only Character conscious of what’s going on, it’s up to her to find her own way out.
Using her new ability to enter her gamer’s head, Claudia plans an escape to the violence-free world outside of The Wasteland’s controlled environment. She needs to know why she was put in the game in the first place and why none of the other characters realize they’re human pawns. But as she learns to manipulate her gamer, Claudia knows that at any moment the game’s creators could discover her ability. If she doesn’t get out of The Wasteland soon, she faces deletion...or death at the hands of another gamer.
