TEAM OF TEAMS

Tantum Collins Chris Fussell Stanley McChrystal David Silverman

New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World

As commander of the United States Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), General McChrystal discarded a century’s worth of management wisdom and pivoted from a pursuit of mechanical efficiency to organic adaptability in the midst of the War on Terror. In this book, General Stanley McChrystal shows not only how the military made that transition, but also how similar shifts are possible in all organizations, from large companies to startups to charities to governments.
In a turbulent world, the best organizations think and act like a team of teams, embracing small groups that combine the freedom to experiment with a relentless drive to share what they’ve learned. Drawing on a wealth of evidence from his military career, the private sector, and sources as diverse as hospital emergency rooms and NASA’s space program, General McChrystal frames the existential challenges facing today’s organizations and presents compelling, effective solutions.

Stanley McChrystal’s last assignment as a four-star general was commanding all US and international forces in Afghanistan. He had previously served as the director of the Joint Staff and as the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command. The author of My Share of the Task (Portfolio, January 2013; simplified Chinese/CITIC), he is currently a senior fellow at Yale’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and cofounder of the McChrystal Group, a leadership consulting firm where Tantum Collins, David Silverman, and Chris Fussell are his colleagues.
