TAKING THE WORK OUT OF NETWORKING
An Introvert’s Guide to Making Connections That Count
In TAKING THE WORK OUT OF NETWORKING, a former Google executive and editorial director of Twitter offers advice for introverts (and anyone who has ever cancelled a coffee date) about how to nurture a vibrant circle of reliable contacts without leaving their comfort zone by channeling their natural instincts.
The common networking advice for introverts are variations on the theme of overcoming or "fixing" their quiet tendencies to become effective. Not so, says Karen Wickre, who will use this book to show how to capitalize on an introvert's true nature to create sustainable connections that can be called upon for career assistance, advice, introductions and favors.
Karen's "embrace your quiet side" approach is for anyone who eschews the glad-handing of traditional networking activities. For example, she advises to skip mixers that introverts don't get much benefit from, anyway, in favor of one-on-one coffees. She shows how to make use of Twitter threads, the "like" and "heart" features on social media and even email to sustain what she calls "the loose touch habit" to build one's network over time. This new way to network will appeal to introverts as well as anyone looking for a way to get ahead in today's ever-changing job market.
Karen Wickre is the former Editorial Director at Twitter, where she arrived after a decade-long career at Google. She is also a co-founder of Newsgeist, an annual conference fostering new approaches to news and information, and a regular tech columnist for Backchannel, a Conde Nast technology and business publication that appears regularly on Wired.com. Karen is on the boards of the International Center for Journalists, the News Literacy Project, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She lives in San Francisco. This is her first book.
