SPY SITES OF NEW YORK CITY

H. Keith Melton Robert Wallace

Two Centuries of Espionage in Gotham

Discover the hideouts of spies in the Big Apple, guided by the authors of SPYCRAFT and THE OFFICIAL CIA MANUAL OF TRICKERY AND DECEPTION. Spy experts H. Keith Melton and Robert Wallace reveal New York City as a city of mystery, adventure, and intrigue. Through every era of American history, New York City emerges as a hub of espionage—where secrets are created, stolen, and passed through clandestine meetings and covert communications.
With maps and photographs of specific addresses, this handbook to New York’s secret history charts nearly 200 sites where spies lived, plotted, and operated, walking many of same streets that exist today and never betraying their true mission. They appeared as ordinary as any stranger you encounter today. Following their footsteps, you will catch the sense of danger and exhilaration that are part of the secret world of espionage. Spy Sites of New York City is the first publication to accompany the exciting displays of “Spy: The Exhibit,” which opened in May 2012 in New York City’s famed Times Square. The exhibit includes spy artifacts and paraphernalia from H. Keith Melton’s vast personal collection and will travel around the United States and internationally. More Spy Sites of different cities are planned. H. Keith Melton is a historian specializing in clandestine technology and espionage “tradecraft.” He has assembled an unparalleled collection of over 8,000 spy devices, books, and papers of eminent spies. He is the author of several books, including CIA Special Weapons and Equipment, Clandestine Warfare, and The Ultimate Spy Book. He is also a member of the board of directors for the new International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. Robert Wallace retired from the CIA in 2003 with 32 years of service as an operations officer and senior executive. Wallace is co-author, with H. Keith Melton, of Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA’S Spytechs from Communism to Al Qaeda and The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception. Currently, he is founder and CEO of the Artemus Consulting Group, and interviewer for the oral history program of the CIA’s Center for the Study of Intelligence.
